Pastor’s Message for the Week of June 15

June 15, 2014M1440043

Dear WGBC Family,

The Great Commission is considered to be the last instructions and cornerstone (foundation stone) of Christian tradition.  To be commission is to be given “a special assignment or to be “charge with a task’ Using these two definitions of the term, we could surmise that Jesus commissioned his disciples with an assignment to complete certain tasks.

One of those tasks according to Matthew 28:16-20 is to teach (train) individuals in “The Way” of Jesus the Christ. As a sign that individuals believed in “The Way” Jesus gave the disciples the authority to baptize them by the name of Father, Son, & Holy Spirit. However, the teaching and baptizing cannot happen unless the disciple obeyed the first instruction.

The believer is called to “Go” and share their faith with others the word “Go” is the first word that is proclaimed in the commission for many this going is translated to mean we are called to evangelize to those who have not heard the Good News of the Kingdom of God. One may wonder is being commissioned only about teaching, baptism and evangelism or is being commissioned about how we live in community with one another?

I believe that we are called or commission to not only be witnesses to the world about the teachings of Jesus but we called to live out the teachings of Jesus. What are the teachings of Jesus? We are called to share with the world a message of hope, redemption, forgiveness, repentance and belief in the one true God. We are called to share the message of Christ but more importantly we called to be like Christ (Christian) to those we encounter daily.  Will you accept the commission to Go and do the work of God? If your answer is yes, Jesus promised that he would be with you. Go in the power of the Holy Spirit to transform the world for God.

Yours in the name of the Risen Christ,

                 Interim Pastor Jermine Alberty

The church’s fathers and male guardians were honored this Sunday with a lovely breakfast of sweets, quiches and casseroles with themed tables ranging from hockey to baseball to literature and movies.

Also during the service, the ladies and female youth sang a hymn for Fathers’ Day,Pat Clark sang a special “Reach Out and Touch,” and Dominique and Jerimiah Alberty performed an original piano composition.

Finally, the gentlemen were presented with booklets reminding them of the “Promises from God for Dads” and Courageous coffee mugs.

Also for the offertory hymn, Laura Unterweger played a jazzy version of “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” that lifted spirits and prepared hearts for Rev. Jermine Alberty’s message about the Great Commission.

Pastor’s Message

Rev. Jermine Alberty shares the Pentecost message "We are Called to All People."

Rev. Jermine Alberty shares the Pentecost message “We are Called to All People.”

Dear WGBC Family,

In the New Testament alone there are some 261 passages, which refer to the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is mentioned fifty-six times in the Gospels, fifty-seven times in the book of Acts, 112 times in the Pauline epistles, and thirty-six times in the remaining New Testament. Clearly, the Spirit of God is important in the life of the people of God. It is by the Spirit of God that we received the things of God.

Often in the Scripture one may learn much about someone simply by studying the names and titles given to that person. So it is with the Holy Spirit. The thirteen titles ascribed to him include the Spirit of God, Christ, eternity, truth, grace, glory, life, wisdom and revelation, comforter, promise, adoption, holiness, and faith. It is these attributes of the Spirit that equips the believer to be Christ to those we are called to reach by the name of God.

On the day Pentecost, the disciple waited patiently to receive this gift from God. On that day, they saw their waiting fulfilled as they were rewarded when a mighty rushing wind filled the room. It was the Holy Spirit that would embolden the disciples to leave the upper room and go into streets to speak God’s message to all people. They went from a group who went from wondering what was next. To a group that was propelled by the Spirit to carry out the work of God. I encourage you to live a Spirit driven life for it is by the Spirit of God that we also are empowered to speak to all people God’s message of love, hope, redemption, repentance and forgiveness.

Yours in the name of the Risen Christ,

Interim Pastor Jermine Alberty
